Krabi is a bustling province in the south of Thailand filled with lights, markets and breath-taking beaches. Although it is a very tourist populated area, the Thai vibe burst through and meant that even in low season, it was thriving with excitement. I visited Krabi on a whim and I’m so glad I did, as it turned out to be one of the memorable places I stayed. Here are my favourite parts that I recommend you add to your list.
Tiger Cave Temple
Tiger Cave Temple is a quest! A journey! A rewarding hike of 1260 steps! I will not lie to you, it is a strenuous activity but the achievement of reaching the top and basking in the 360 degree emerald mountain views, makes it just about worth it 😉 At the foot of the mountain you can visit the actual cave or get blessed by a monk.
Krabi Emerald Pool
There is something about a crystal clear lagoon that brings peace and luxury to the soul. Krabi offers a couple of swimming spots, with the emerald pool being one of the most impressive. You will walk through the jungle on a boarded bridge path until you reach the shimmering swim spot. Usually very picturesque but of course it rained. No problem when you’re already wet and swimming, but it’s hard to take great photos.
Krabi Hot Springs
Scenic pools, heated by earth’s nature to give you that lavish spa feel. With different pools with different temperatures, you can choose the perfect heat for your relaxation regardless of the weather. There are a few hot springs in Krabi: I visited Krabi Hot Springs waterfall Spa.
Railay Beach in Krabi
I am devastated to admit I did not make it to Railay beach. This was due to the terrible weather most days I was there. The harsh rain and winds meant the long tail boats couldn’t sail over. Hopefully, you will have more luck than me! You can get the boat for 100 baht each way. Just down the way from where I stayed, you can buy a ticket and wait for enough people to fill the boat and then be on your way. If you walk further down, I have been told there is another port, where the waiting time is lower but the prices are higher.
Ao Nang Landmark Night Market
This is one of the liveliest markets I have explored (Beside Khao San Road, of course). Bringing very social vibes, there is a big table seating area, where you can grab your food and find a spare space. I saw Traditional Thai Dancing, live music and Muay Thai Boxing demonstrations. During my visit, it was the Bike convention, so I got to see 100’s of classic and expensive bikes parade the streets and market.
Krabi Forest Elephant Shelter
An awesome reason to go to Krabi is to visit the ethical elephant sanctuaries where rescued elephants live out the rest of their lives. They are often rescued from shows or from logging companies. You can interact with the elephants at their will, feed them fruits (With a couple of bananas and cakes for yourself) and cool them off in the heat. Majestic and large, these beautiful animals will surprise you and leave you in awe at their intelligence.
Shanni’s Top Tips
1. Tiger Cave Temple is the home to monkeys, so do not pack snacks or you may get a close, unfriendly encounter.
2. Ao Nang area is a great to stay as there are lots of eateries, markets and boats to Railay beach
3. Guided tours are really good for hitting 3 destinations in 1: Hotsprings, Tiger Cave Temple and Emerald Pool. This is often cheaper than trying to get to these destinations separately.
I hope one day to return to this dynamic area of Thailand and explore even more of what Krabi has to offer.
