What is Drift the Globe Travel Blog?

Welcome to my Drift the Globe blog! My name is Shannon, I am learning Portuguese, I believe I should have been casted in Mamamia 2 and of course, I am a travel addict! Read on to get to know me and this blog a little bit more.

Why I travel?

During 2019, I went through a difficult time with my mental health which really got me thinking about what makes me happy. Was it knitting? Running long distance? (Definitely not) Cleaning up after my flat mates? No…what makes me truly happy, and I am talking beaming from ear to ear, was the feeling I get when experiencing a whole new destination.

At this hard time, the most memorable journey, was one I took to Zambia. This is an experience I could talk about forever and ever, until most people are sick of hearing (Hopefully not you though 😉). This is the first time I experienced, what the Latins would call ‘Mysterium tremendum et fascinans’ – the simultaneous feeling of fear and fascination when you feel or see something that creates just the right combination for that ecstasy sensation.

For me, this was looking at one of the wonders of the world- Victoria Falls, seeing how it engulfed me by size, its deadly drop and powerful water currents, yet I stood in awe at its magnificence and beauty. I felt ecstatic, yet calm and could have stayed in that moment for eternity. These are the kind of moments I strive to discover and hope I can help you find them too.

A natural wonder of the world in Zambia

Victoria Falls

Deep in my heart, I am a sun worshiper, a heat hugger, a warmth longer. I love hot destinations and believe that weather plays a massive part in mood and state of mind. However, I am partial to a bit of snow. So, do not worry, this blog will cover many climates and being from the UK, I am no stranger to rain.

What blogs will I find here?

I want to focus on areas that I am also searching for when planning my next trip. As a previous student, I strive to find bargains that do not compromise the experience and most importantly moments that are free, fun and just for you! I will also cover my Destination Recommendations and Quirky moments.

Survival depends on our food source, so we might as well enjoy it. Within the ‘Taste that Trip’ section, I will explore different cuisines, funky establishments and eating on the road.

The Final section focuses on the Journey. So, you’ve been on Pinterest, you’ve saved Instagram pictures and made a long list of amazing paces you want to visit. But wait, they are opposite ends of the country…how are you going to get there? This section will give tips, advice and maps on how best to travel between your desired destinations.

So, what are you waiting for? Get reading!
