Travel foods with minimal ingredients for on the go!

Long term travel can get expensive and although our taste buds would be eternally grateful for sampling new menus each day, our bank accounts just can’t keep up. When you’re at home you are treated with the best range of spices and a broad spectrum of vegetables, but surprisingly, these don’t fit in your backpack. Here is what you need- tasty recipes with minimal ingredients. Not all these flavours will be 10/10, however it is a small sacrifice that can lead to affording lavish boat tours in the Maldives or safaris in Kenya.

If you’re a budget traveller like me, you may also be sharing fridges and cooking facilities in hostels and/or be on the move throughout the day, leaving no time to cook at lunch. This results in eating on the go. I use collapsible food containers as they clean easily and take up less space when not in use. I also try to make my own food when possible, to keep the restaurant bill low. Here are some meals with just 5 ingredients.

Lazy Chow Mein

Ingredients

1.       Noodles

2.       Chicken

3.       Peppers

4.       Onions

5.       Soy sauce

Fajita Rice

Ingredients

1.       Rice

2.       Chicken

3.       Peppers

4.       Onions

5.       Cajun Spice

Travel Bolognese

Ingredients

1.       Mince

2.       Passata/Chopped tomatoes

3.       Basil

4.       Onions

5.       Spaghetti

Travel Sandwich

Ingredients

1.       Bread

2.       Ham

3.       Cheese

4.       Butter (if you like)

Sounds ridiculous, but these will save money, can be made without kitchen facilities and are enough for multiple meals. You can obviously exchange ham and cheese for whichever filling you fancy.

Shanni’s Top Tips

1.       Have chicken/ vegetable stock cubes as a staple in your bag, this will elevate the flavour in your dishes

2.       You could buy one bag of rice and substitute it in for spaghetti/noodles, to save you buying multiple big bags of grain based products..

3.       Save leftovers in another container for the following day.

As I discover more easy meals for on the go, I will update this blog. If you have any convenient travel meals, let me know!
