Como town
Everyone warns not to stay in Como as there is nothing to do. I Ignored their comments and tried it for myself. Como is an amazing base to explore the Lake. It provides the perfect starting point to visit other towns as well as offering its own beauty. The town itself offers a variety of dining options and Christmas festivities in the winter. Of course, if you’re looking to jump off your balcony for a swim, then other towns are better suited.
Funicular to Brunante
A spectacular recommendation by the hostel staff. We ascended upwards in a traditional funicular and were greeted by staff offering paid taxi rides to the top. We opted for the walk and felt we got to see Brunante better. Upon reaching the summit we received the most mesmerising reward at Faro Voltiano. Views of the whole lake merging with pink and orange waves of light. Potentially the best view of my Europe trip.
Lake walks
Stroll to the left side of the lake to capture breath-taking views of the mountains and colourful condos. If you’re up for a long walk, you can head to the trail point to get a higher view. You can also wander past some impressive mansions and gardens.
Ferry to other towns
The main port is right across from the town square making it ideal for day trips to Bellagio and Menaggio (around 11 Euros for a single). We visited in early December and it felt like we had Bellagio to ourselves. It was magical. Tiny alleys with mountains peeking through and lakeside secluded spots for romantic moments.
Ostello Bello Hostel
Staying in and around Lake Como can be really pricey and as someone travelling on a budget, I was worried it was beyond my means. Even the hostels seemed expensive. I could only find one Hostel in Como town, so I went ahead and booked it. It advertised daily events such as walking tours and pizza nights.
This hostel was next level! The warmest hospitality, accompanied by a variety of free amenities to make staying more comfortable: Shampoo, Shower gel, Earplugs and more!
To match the Italians’ generosity, the hostel also offers free pasta, vegetables and sauce, meaning you can cook as many meals as you like without spending a penny.
Shanni’s Top Tips
- Give yourself plenty of time before sunset to go on the Funicular, as you will still have a 30/40 minute hike to reach the top.
- You can get the train from Milan to Como and then Como Town is a 10 minute walk from the station.
- Buy a return ticket for the Funicular as the top station is not always manned.
- It is cheaper to get the bus back from the other towns (6 euros).
