That’s right, I’m back with more ‘free activity’ blogs! This time in Amsterdam. A city that is thriving with tourists and therefore often sets high fees for attractions. Here are some ideas to level you budget back out, see more of the beautiful city and still have a your dream day.
Roof with a view
Head over to the science museum and up to the NEMO rooftop for spectacular views of Amsterdam’s architecture. There are spinning chairs, water features and places for a picnic. This area is free to the public and open everyday, providing there are no high winds. If you head inside the museum’s reception, you can pick up a free postcard. We were lucky enough to come on the museum’s 100th Birthday and therefore were admitted free entrance. Check the website for more potential free dates.
Cheese tasting
Now, I saw this on many blogs prior to my trip and I thought ‘Is that really an activity, eating the tiniest cube of cheese?’ Turns out, yes, it absolutely is! You just have to eat enough of them 😉 The main streets have branded cheese boutiques every few shops. If you go into a few, you can try over 20 varieties and find yourself too full for lunch. If you’re feeling creative, take a notebook, rate them and compare notes. You could try blind tasting with your friends, give them a stick and get them to guess which one it was.
Cats on a Boat
You have probably heard of Cat cafes but in true Amsterdam style, why not take it onto the canal. The Depoezenboot is a rescue shelter for stray cats and they invite 3 or 4 people each 30 minutes to come and give the residents some love. Check your dates as it is only open 3 days a week and between the hours of 1-3pm. You will need to book online HERE
Free Amsterdam Ferries
There are many canals, small and gigantic, that run through the city and last time I checked they are not recommended swimming lanes. However, you will need to get across to reach various attractions throughout Amsterdam. Two of the free ferries will do just that and one will even travel further up the canal giving you, in effect, a free boat tour. Check them out HERE
Diamond Factory
A secret gem in the free activities list. This experience shows you the process of diamond production and teaches you how to distinguish between different types of diamonds and recognize their authenticity. An awesome perk of this tour is they have an extensive list of languages you can choose and they will provide you with a corresponding guide. On the way out, you can also grab a free hot drink.
Flamingos in Amsterdam
Attached to a small zoo, you can visit the Artisplein garden and see flamingos for free. There are tables, chairs and evening lighting and so makes for the perfect picnic spot or even a ‘bring your own drinks’ event. We visited in the early morning and watched the light reflecting on the water as flamingos paraded through.
Shanni’s Top Tips
- Most attractions are in walking distance once you are in the centre. However, you need factor in the time it takes to wait for the ferries and cross.
- Do not use google maps to find the Red light district (You might get lost), just ask in a shop and they will give you directions.
- Give yourself an extra day to explore nearby picturesque towns such as Zaandam
